Time Warp: From Jurassic World to Outer Worlds
In Summer 2015, entering 9th grade students at Canutillo High School were invited to join MaST Academy Scholars in a journey through time. Inspired by blockbuster hits that year, Interstellar and Jurassic World, scholars worked together to write and present TEKS-aligned lessons for a two-week camp that first took students back in time millions of years to brush shoulders with dinosaurs and then into the future to travel from star to star on a rocket ship. During the camp, students:
- Calculated whether or not they could outrun different dinosaurs
- Created their own imprint and cast fossils
- Use the Pythagorean theorem to calculate the distance between stars
- Adapt lifeforms to live on alien environments
The first week ended with a field trip to Insights El Paso Science Center DinoTracks site and a tour around UTEP while the second week culminated in a field trip to watch the Jurassic World and identify the scientific inaccuracies presented in the film.
MaST Academy would like to thank ADP, Canutillo ISD, and Mentor Teachers Heather Cawley and Hector Navarro for serving as captains on this voyage through the time.
